Nevertheless, variation in aggression is maintained in populations, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Here we tested the hypothesis that aggressive behaviours compromise the antipredator behaviour of prey, which would link aggressive behaviours to a cost of predation. We presented computer-animated images of predators to the cooperatively breeding cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher either during territorial contests with a group of territory intruders or when the test fish were alone. We investigated their response latencies and the behaviour directed towards predator images. We found that test fish responded to the predator images significantly later during territorial contests than when they were alone. Moreover, during territorial contests, response latencies of test fish increased with increasing levels of aggression towards conspecifics. Test fish also responded more aggressively to the predator images during territorial contests than when they were alone. During territorial contests, fish that responded later to the predator images were more aggressive towards these images. Our findings suggest that territorial contests compromised the ability of prey to respond quickly to predators. However, we propose that increased aggression towards predators might increase survival chances of prey during predator encounters in nature, and it may thus compensate for costs incurred by delayed predator responses during territorial contests. To test this hypothesis experiments under natural predation regimes that examine the relationship between predation risk, territorial and antipredator aggression are required. © 2016 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Neuromodulation of the agonistic behavior in two species of weakly electric fish that display different types of aggression.
Agonistic behavior has shaped sociality across evolution. Though extremely diverse in types of displays and timing, agonistic encounters always follow the same conserved phases (evaluation, contest and post-resolution) and depend on homologous neural circuits modulated by the same neuroendocrine mediators across vertebrates. Among neuromodulators, serotonin (5-HT) is the main inhibitor of aggre...

In many species, territorial neighbours fight to establish their mutual border and then develop a truce, known as the dear-enemy phenomenon, characterized by reduced vigilance and aggression along the border. We present evidence that among male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) the dear-enemy relationship is a form of reciprocal conditional cooperation that is stabilized, at least in ...
متن کاملThe role of androgens in the mediation of seasonal territorial aggression in male Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).
Testosterone (T) mediates aggression in a wide range of species. In some species, however, aggressive behavior persists or increases during the non-breeding season when T levels are relatively low. Animals that do not display a positive correlation between aggression and gonadal steroids suggest the need for further investigation of alternative neuroendocrine mechanisms mediating seasonal aggre...
متن کاملBuilding the case for a novel teleost model of non-breeding aggression and its neuroendocrine control.
In vertebrates, aggression has been traditionally associated with high levels of circulating androgens in breeding males. Nevertheless, the centrality of androgens as primary modulators of aggression is being reconsidered in at least in two particular cases: (1) territorial aggression outside the breeding season, and (2) aggression by females. We are developing the weakly electric fish, Gymnotu...
متن کاملTestosterone and Heterospecific Aggression in the Adult Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) During the Nestling Period
During the breeding season, birds establish territories and aggressively defend them against intruders. In general, conspecific intruders elicit greater behavioral responses than heterospecific because heterospecifics are not usually competing for the same resources. Interference competition, through aggressive interactions between species, has the potential to affect community structure [1]. I...
